“Ukraine – Crucifixion” Exhibition: A Window into War's Unyielding Realities

The National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II hosts an unprecedented display—'Ukraine – Crucifixion,' a pioneering exposition in Ukraine and globally. Featuring 1,776 authentic artifacts collected firsthand from battle zones and newly liberated areas in Kyiv and Chernihiv regions from April 3rd to May 6th, 2022, spanning an area of 900 square meters. Curated by Yuriy Savchuk, the museum's director, and artist Anton Logov.

This composition comprises two inherently antithetical sections: 'Horde' and 'Ukraine – Crucifixion.' The former sketches the landscape of Russian propaganda, the full-scale invasion, and the invaders' military attire, weaponry, and lifestyle from the "Russian world."

The latter segment unfolds across two locations: 'Ukraine – Crucifixion' and 'Shelter.' The former displays salvaged spiritual and cultural relics, charred window frames, remnants of household equipment, sports gear discovered from the ashes, along with children's items, drawings, and toys.

Dominating the narrative are the saved treasures of our nation: the entrance gates of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin in Plemiaga village and the dome and dome cross of the Church of the Ascension in Lukianivka village in Kyiv region.

Also depicted are the wounded icon “Descent from the Cross” from the ravaged Church of St. Dmitry Rostovsky in Makariv, the damaged framework that once held paintings by the world-renowned Maria Pryimachenko from the burnt Ivanivka Museum of History and Local Lore.

The latter meticulously recreates the reality of life and time spent in various shelters during bombings, narrating the 37 days of existence in a bomb shelter in Hostomel, down to the smallest details.

This exhibition has garnered immense popularity among museum visitors and enjoys high media appeal. As of June 7, 2022, 7,812 individuals have engaged with the exposition.

It has also received coverage in 63 domestic and international publications, reviews, comments, stories, and interviews, including prominent international press outlets such as The New York Times (USA), The Guardian (UK), and Le Monde (France).
